MARCH 16, 2018 – OREGANO

Did you know that there are different types of Oregano?  There are also herbs that are posing as Oregano.

Origanum vulgare

The type of Oregano that the majority of us use is Greek Oregano.  This plant is actually a relative of the Mint family and grows in the Mediterranean.

Mexican Oregano is technically not Oregano at all, and has a peppery taste.  This one is a relative of the Lemon Verbena family and grows in……..Mexico.

The Italian version is technically Oregano, however it is a hybrid with Marjoram.  This makes it sweeter.

The Ancient Greeks believed this herb was created by the Goddess Aphrodite as a symbol of happiness.  The word “oregano” comes from the Greek words oros, for “mountain,” and ganos, for “joy” meaning “ joy of the mountains”.

Oregano is more than just an herb that makes Pasta Sauce so good.  It has medicinal uses as well:

1.  Can be used both internally and externally to fight of infections.
2. Oregano oil can be used to keep of yeast infections and can be used for respiratory health and strengthening the immune system.
3. Oregano oil is used to treat ear infections in children and adults.
4. Oregano oil takes care of bug bites, rashes and has quite an effect on poison ivy too.
5. A drop of oregano oil on toothbrush will help completely take care of gum disease and tooth decay.

Before you run out and buy Oregano oil, a word of advice; the oil is super concentrated, so if you choose to use it for any of the above dilute it with equal parts olive oil.  ***it is recommended that one should consult a physician before consumption or applying the oil topically on affected area.

My name is Anna Hattauer and I love to cook. I am a personal chef living in Maryland. I grew up in California, joined the United States Army right after high school, got married, raised three children while going to college and working full time. As a young military wife and mother, we didn't have the money to go out to eat on a regular basis and had to make each pay check stretch. I learned how to prepare meals that were delicious, while staying within budget. While working full-time in the corporate world with the usual 2-3 hour I-270 commute, coupled with school & sports events, scouts and taking care of three children, it was tough to find the time or the energy to come home and prepare healthy meals for my family. Being a military family, we have traveled to many places around the world. I love trying new foods, the challenge of cooking new recipes and having friends over for dinner as well as cooking for special events. After cooking for my friends and family for over 25 years, I decided that I wanted to share my love of food and make people happy, so I dropped the corporate chaos and attended a formal culinary school and became a certified personal chef. I am a member of the United States Personal Chef Association and I am licensed, insured and ServSafe certified.
