When thinking of poppy seeds, I think of the red poppy flower. Which is right, because that is where they come from. Have you heard that the seeds is what they make Opium from? Well, that is not entirely true; although there is a tiny bit of opiate in the seed. Opium is not made from the seed, but the sap that comes out of the pod that the seed is in.
Poppies are native to Mediterranean regions. Today, Holland Australia and the Czech Repblic are the main producers of poppy seeds. Poppy Seeds are used to flavor breads, cakes, rolls, and cookies.
Since antiquity, poppies have symbolized honor. That is why when we celebrate Memorial Day, the Poppy is used; to honor those military personnel who died serving.
